Validation of Articular Cartilage Tensile Moduli from Transversely Isotropic Biphasic Indentation Fem Analysis

چکیده
Indentation testing has frequently been used as a method to obtain the material properties of articular cartilage in compression [1]. To account for the wellestablished anisotropic nature of cartilage [2] previous studies have modeled the cartilage as a transversely isotropic biphasic material using optimized FEM curvefitting techniques to obtain the material properties of the tissue in compression. Average tensile moduli obtained from these studies have compared well with average tensile moduli obtained from direct measurements of similar material [3]. This study is unique in that it compares the tensile moduli obtained from direct measurements to those obtained from FEM curve-fits of indentation tests of the same material.

Contact analysis of biphasic transversely isotropic cartilage layers and correlations with tissue failure.
Failure of articular cartilage has been investigated experimentally and theoretically, but there is only partial agreement between observed failure and predicted regions of peak stresses. Since trauma and repetitive stress are implicated in the etiopathogenesis of osteoarthritis, it is important to develop cartilage models which correctly predict sites of high stresses. Cartilage is anisotropic...
متن کاملAn asymptotic model for the deformation of a transversely isotropic, transversely homogeneous biphasic cartilage layer
In the present paper, an asymptotic model is constructed for the short-time deformation of an articular cartilage layer modeled as transversely isotropic, transversely homogeneous (TITH) biphasic material. It is assumed that the layer thickness is relatively small compared with the characteristic size of the normal surface load applied to the upper surface of the cartilage layer, while the bott...
متن کاملAnalytic Solution for the Indentation of a Transversely Isotropic Elastic Layer Bonded to a Rigid Foundation
The analytical solution for a transversely isotropic linear elastic layer bonded to a rigid foundation and indented by a rigid cylinder or sphere was developed. This solution follows procedures used by others to solve contact problems of linear anisotropic materials. The solution can be used to find the stress distribution and the displacement field in anisotropic layers like articular cartilag...
متن کاملA cross-validation of the biphasic poroviscoelastic model of articular cartilage in unconfined compression, indentation, and confined compression.
The biphasic poroviscoelastic (BPVE) model was curve fit to the simultaneous relaxation of reaction force and lateral displacement exhibited by articular cartilage in unconfined compression (n=18). Model predictions were also made for the relaxation observed in reaction force during indentation with a porous plane-ended metal indenter (n=4), indentation with a nonporous plane ended metal indent...
متن کاملDetermination of the viscoelastic properties of hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) and human articular cartilage
In this work, a systematic study of the viscoelastic properties of hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) is presented. In addition to artificial PEG-DA-based hydrogels, natural hydrogels in the form of human articular cartilage were examined. Specimens were (unconfined) compression tested under static and dynamic load. Besides this, instrumented indentation tests with diffe...
